Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a community support service that aims to maintain the nutritional status of its recipients.
The service allows many elderly and disabled people to remain independent and, amongst others, assists people recovering from illness or hospital treatment.
The Whanganui District Health Board Meals on Wheels service is currently provides approximately 120 meals a week. Meals are cooked on site at Whanganui Hospital and delivered to individuals homes by AGE Concern drivers.
The National Service Specifications for Meals on Wheels outline a set of standards that providers must work to when providing their service. One specific quality requirement states that meal providers must “provide guidance to clients on meal handling once received, for example reheating, freezer storage, defrosting and cooking”.
