Emergency Department Patient Volumes Increasing
back

As with many other Hospitals in New Zealand, the public demand for services at the Emergency Department at Wanganui Hospital has significantly increased.

During a 24 hour period on Monday 19th July, 83 patients presented to the Emergency Department. This was a record number of presentations, representing a 50% increase compared to the average volume.

Emergency Department Clinical Director Dr Athol Steward says the volume of patients seeking treatment at the Emergency Department has been progressively increasing.

“In June last year 1567 patients presented to ED compared to 1800 in June this year.”

Dr Steward said that one of the factors contributing to the escalation was patients  presenting with neglected illness.

“Had they gone to their doctor earlier, hospital care may have been avoided. It is important that if anyone has a health concern they go to their doctor as early as possible so the problem does not deteriorate. Of course if it is an emergency, then we are the best place for them.”

“Significant pressure was placed on the service on Monday, however with the commitment from staff, many of whom worked extra hours, the significant influx of patients was handled very well.”

If your General Practitioner is not available, the Wanganui Accident & Medical (WAM) provides an after hour general medical care service. WAM is open from 8am to 9pm, seven-days a week, including public holidays and is located next to the Emergency Department at Wanganui Hospital.
