Health targets released this week by the Ministry of Health showed the Whanganui District Health Board continued to lift its performance in the last quarter, ending December 2010.
Shorter stays in emergency departments:
Target: That 95 percent of people presenting to the Emergency Department are admitted, discharged or transferred within six hours.
WDHB was one percent above the average 88 percent achieved by the country’s 20 DHBs.
Improved Access to Elective Surgery:
Target: An increase in the volume of elective surgery by an average of 4000 discharges per year.
After achieving an impressive 110 percent in the previous quarter WDHB achieved 115 percent in quarter two – 14 percent above the average achieved by DHBs nationwide. This places Whanganui at the top of the table.
Shorter Waits for Cancer Treatment:
Target: Everyone needing radiation treatment will be treated within six weeks.
Every one of the country’s DHBs achieved the 100 percent target.
Increased Immunisation for two-year-olds:
Target: By July 2011, 90 percent of two-year-olds are fully immunised.
WDHB’s ongoing efforts to reach the 90 percent target by June 2011 saw the board lift its performance from 88 percent in quarter one to 92 percent in quarter two.
Better Help for Smokers to Quit:
Target: By July 2011, 90 percent of hospitalised smokers will be provided with advice and help to quit.
Data covering patients presenting to the Emergency Department, day stay and other hospital-based interventions show the WDHB achieved a 69 percent result for the first quarter – a 20 percent increase on last quarter.
Better Diabetes and Cardiovascular Services:
Combined average score for three indicators – increased percent of people with diabetes attend free annual checks and have satisfactory or better management, and, increased percent of adult population have had their cardiovascular disease risk assessed in the last five years.
(The quarter two results are based on updated diabetes prevalence figures. For the purposes of comparison between quarters one and two, the published quarter one result has been recalculated using the updated diabetes prevalence figures.)
WDHB again did well achieving 79 percent against the 73 percent average – a result that places Whanganui third on the table.
