Emergency Department
The Emergency Department has a capacity of 15 beds of which three are resuscitation beds.


Critical Care Unit
The Critical Care Unit is a multidisciplinary, combined intensive/coronary level 1/2 unit of four beds that provides a continuous service. The service provided in the unit includes the ability to resuscitate patients, initiate cardiovascular and respiratory support, and to monitor and provide treatment for the critically ill patient.


Child
Alexander and Bruce is a 13 bed ward providing paediatric, medical, surgical and mental health services to children up to the age of 16 or older if still at school.

  • Rehabilitation
  • Outpatient services cover rural as well as city communities.

The Neonatal Unit is a four cot, level two unit providing specialist neonatal care for neonates who are born with special needs or develop special needs prior to discharge.

This service includes:

  • Care of babies with moderate complications and less than 32 weeks gestation and less than150 grams in weight
  • Provision of resuscitation and stabilisation prior to transfer to a tertiary hospital.


Easson Ward
The orthopaedic ward is an integral component of Wanganui Hospital ’s health service structure. Its scope of practice primarily involves providing acute, arranged and elective orthopaedic surgical procedures. At times of high patient acuity in other areas, the ward accommodates medical and surgical overflow.

The 22-bed ward provides continuous services, with staffing resources able to cater to service demands / contracted volumes.


Simpson Ward
Simpson is a 25-bed ward providing a service for general surgical, gynaecological, ear, nose and throat, urology, dental and opthamology. The ward is staffed to allow a 24 hour response to acute/arranged admissions managed to contracted volumes.


Medical Ward (Bakewell)
Bakewell Ward is a 30-bed inpatient medical ward. The ward is predominately acute driven and covers a range of acute medical services including cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, renal medicine, respiratory, rheumatology and clinical haematology.

An interdisciplinary focus to patient care with primary/secondary linkages are key aspects of the acute medical inpatient continuum.


Therapy Services
Therapy services are offered by a multi-disciplinary team providing assessment and treatment to inpatients and community clients. The disciplines include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, dietitians, speech language, orthotics and a loans department.

Chaplain:
Cares for the spiritual needs of patients and provides a weekly Chapel and on call service for patients and whanau.


Medical Library:
Provides a library and research service for clinical staff from all continuums.

Telephonists:
The first point of call for telephone enquiries and callers to Wanganui Hospital. Provides a 24 hour communications ‘hub’ for the hospital.
