The Community and Rural Services continuum provides maternity, paediatric, neonatal, public health, school dental and visiting neuro-developmental services to individuals and families of the Whanganui region.
Maternal
Maternity services provided by Wanganui Hospital comprise:
- Antenatal education, two sessions per week, each class runs for six weeks
- Facilities for Lead Maternity Carers
- Primary services, including midwife only continuity service, labour and birth care for women with no identified Lead Maternity Carer, home help and nappy service
- Secondary services
- Outpatient services, including family planning clinics
- Rural services provide birthing units in Rangitikei and Waimarino with two inpatient beds at Taihape Rural Health Centre
The Paediatric Nursing service supports both the paediatric ward and the neonatal unit, and case manages children with multiple special needs in the community.
Assessment, Treatment and Rehabilitation Services
This service provides case management for patients in a 12-bed ward, as well as community education and a day service for disability sector and Accident Compensation Corporation clients.
The multi-disciplinary team provides a regional service and also links with the Community Mental Health team.
Community Nurse Services
The Community Nursing Service for Wanganui comprises a team of speciality nurses and educators who focus on specific diseases such as diabetes, cardiac ostomy, oncology, wound management and respiratory diseases.
