Operating Theatres
Wanganui Hospital ’s operating theatre consists of four main operating theatres and one minor operating theatre, a post anaesthetic care unit and sterile services which provide a service to all surgical disciplines and obstetric services.

Surgical disciplines include:

  • Dental


Surgical Day Unit
The Surgical Day Unit is a 12-bed unit, providing a service for surgical day cases, an increasing number of medical day cases and pre-admission clinics.

Outpatient Services

  • Endoscopy:
    The Endoscopy Suite is located in the Outpatients Department and provides facilities for both medical and surgical services.
  • Audiology:
    The audiology service is also located within the Outpatients Department. The primary role of the audiology service is to provide hearing assessments and supply and fit hearing aids for clients.
  • Outpatients:
    The Outpatients Department provides a wide range of outpatient services for all specialities, including Whanganui District Health Board consultants, visiting consultants, minor operative procedures. The Outpatient Department is the key point of access for elective referrals to the hospital.


Medical Records and Patient Travel:
Provides a service for inpatients and outpatients travelling to access specialised health care – travel bookings, accommodation and reimbursements. Takes care of the integrated health records of each patient – including filing of notes, lab results etc.


Speciality Teams:

Speciality teams provide an incorporated approach to the delivery of service, one point of contact for both consultants and patients for each speciality. Administrators make patient bookings for surgery and outpatient appointments, provide medical typing and secretarial services for consultants.


ACC Support
Responsible for the administration and co-ordination of all Accident Compensation Corporation contracts held by Wanganui Hospital. These include elective surgery, clinical Services, hand therapy, community nursing and non acute inpatient rehabilitation.

Coders:
The coders translate the diagnosis, care and procedures each inpatient receives in hospital into caseweights. A caseweight is the measure used by the Ministry of Health for funding inpatient care.


Pharmacy:
Located at Wanganui Hospital the pharmacy provides a clinical pharmaceuticals and medication information service to the wider hospital. The pharmacy also participates in the Wanganui community pharmacies after-hours roster.


Laboratory Services (QLab):
Provides a full range of diagnostic testing and laboratory services for tests referred by community doctors and specialists. Private contracts are also undertaken for specialised testing.


Radiology:
The Radiology Department is located at Wanganui Hospital with X-ray services available at Taihape and Waimarino Rural Health Centres. The Radiology Department, including general X-ray, ultrasound, Computerised Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging provides a large range of diagnostic imaging.
