Orthotics services provide artificial devices (orthoses), such as splints and braces, to help:
- improve independence and quality of life
- support habilitation and rehabilitation
- support community participation
- improve function or prevent and correct deformity (for people with nervous or musculoskeletal system conditions)
- immobilise damaged joints or muscles
- aid healing
- promote venous return (blood circulation) and lymphatic flow.
Orthotic products are not prosthetics (artificial limbs).
Orthotics services include:
- assessment by the orthotist
- measurement and casting for orthotic devices
- production, provision, repair and maintenance of orthotic devices
- fitting and training in their use
- review of orthotic devices.
