Oral health status at age 5 and school year 8 data

These spreadsheets provide data on the oral health status of tamariki at age 5 and school year 8 (12 to 13 years).

The data is reported annually by calendar year from the Community Oral Health Service (COHS). The COHS capture statistics on the:

  • number of tamariki seen
  • level of decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft/DMFT)
  • percentage of tamariki who do not have tooth decay or cavities (caries-free).

Data is organised by:

  • district and region
  • ethnicity
  • fluoridation status.

Definitions

Numerator

Data source — Districts from Community Oral Health Services.

Tamariki are counted at either:

  • their first dental check after they turn 5 but before they turn 6
  • the dental visit closest to when they finish with COHS (this is usually year 8).

The measure counts how many tamariki have no tooth decay at that visit.

Denominator

Data source — Districts from Community Oral Health Services.

The total number of tamariki who have been examined in the age 5 years or school year 8 age groups in the year that the reporting relates to.

Other components of this indicator

The data reported in the numerator and denominator must also be broken down by:

  • ethnicity, using prioritised ethnicity into the following groups — Māori, Pacific or Other
  • water fluoridation status of the school area the tamariki attends, defined as — fluoridated or non-fluoridated

Numerator

Data source — Districts from Community Oral Health Services.

At the first examination after the tamaiti has turned 5 years, but before their 6th birthday (age 5 years), or at the contact closest to their last dental examination before they leave the Community Oral Health Service (school year 8), the total number of teeth that are decayed (d/D), missing (due to caries m/M) and filled (f/F).

The total number of tamariki who have been examined in the age 5 years or school year 8 age groups in the year that the reporting relates to.
