Child Development Services is located at:

• 208 Avenue Road East
• Hastings

We strive to work in partnership with parents, caregivers and whānau to support the development of tamariki to allow them and their whānau to participate in life's activities. To achieve this we provide:

• therapy support
• post-operative therapy for tamariki who fit our referral criteria
• hydrotherapy 
• developmental follow-up of high-risk pēpi.

We also help with Enable New Zealand (Whaikaha funding provider) applications for:

• home equipment, including bathing, showering, walking frames, standing frames, beds and mattresses
• wheelchairs and seating, car seats, and lying supports
• housing modifications.

We are a multidisciplinary team of over 30 allied health professionals, your tamaiti may see more than 1 member of the service.

We see tamariki with a range of conditions such as:

• cerebral palsy
• delayed development
• autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
• down syndrome (Trisomy 21)
• neuromuscular disorders and syndromes with developmental delays.

We will assess the development of your tamaiti using standardised assessments, observation and discussion with whānau to identify strengths and areas of difficulty. With your permission, we will also talk to other involved people, such as teachers. Areas we may assess include:

• gross motor skills
• fine motor skills
• feeding
• self-care
• specialised equipment needed for the home
• home safety adaptation
• language and communication
• play and learning
• intellectual function
• medical or diagnosis
• neuro-behavioural conditions such as autism.

Referrals to the Child Development Service need to be made by a doctor, other health professional, teacher or Needs Assessment Service Coordinator.

We do not accept referrals that sit outside our service contract. Refer to one of the following if the reason for referral is listed and there are no additional development concerns.

Paediatrics

Suspected or diagnosed ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) or ADD (attention deficit disorder), for example unable to stay on task, difficulty sitting still, unable to maintain attention or concentrate.

Soiling or wetting problems.

Moderate to severe mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, and self-harm.

Isolated speech and language concerns — a private speech-language therapist can also help.

School-based concerns or needs, such as handwriting, transitions at school or access to the curriculum — Also talk to the school about this.
