The mortality web tool helps you explore trends over time with interactive graphs and tables. You can download filtered results, data dictionaries and full data sets from in the web tool.
In July 2025 the format of the web tool was amended. If you want to access more detailed mortality data than is available in the web tool, email us at data-enquiries@health.govt.nz
Information in the web tool
Preliminary information for the underlying causes of all deaths registered in New Zealand in 2022. Data is summarised by basic demographics, such as sex and ethnicity, for all causes of death, and common causes of death.
Number of deaths from 2013 to 2022 by:
- ICD chapter
- ICD subgroup
- demographics.
The number of deaths by ICD 3-character codes is available as a downloadable dataset.
Historical mortality data by sex and age group for certain causes of death from 1948 to 2022. Māori and non-Māori mortality data is presented from 1996 to 2022.
Technical information that details the:
- data sources
- analytical methods used to produce the summary data
- definitions for commonly used terms.
The data on external causes of death for 2022 is not yet available. It is not complete enough to release.
