Patient Eligibility

No one will be refused urgent treatment, however charges will apply for people who are not eligible for publicly funded services in New Zealand.

All patients must prove they are eligible for publicly funded health care before receiving treatment at Whanganui Hospital. If you are not a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, you may not be eligible for publicly funded healthcare. Check your eligibility with the Ministry of Health.

Proof of eligibility, such as a New Zealand passport or birth certificate, will only need to be presented once as your eligibility status will be recorded for future visits to the hospital.

Proof of Eligibility
You can either bring your proof of eligibility to your next hospital visit or you can take it to the Clinical Records Department which is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am until 4pm. Photocopies of documents are not acceptable as the original document must be sighted.

Emergency care
No one will be refused urgent treatment but charges will apply for people who are not eligible for publicly funded services in New Zealand. After receiving emergency treatment patients have fourteen days to prove eligibility or will be invoiced for the care received.

Charges for non-eligible patients
Charges are based on national pricing and are only a guide.
