Nurse Rachel Work with the Marie Jarden Memorial Award.

Dedication, compassion and empathy are the hallmarks of Whanganui nurse Rachel Work, and now those qualities have been recognised with an award.

Work, who helps look after the 56 elderly residents of the Masonic Court rest home, was presented with the Marie Jarden Memorial Award at a graduation ceremony at Whanganui Hospital last week. [December 6]

She was one of 18 nurses graduating from Whanganui District Health Board’s  NETP (Nurse Entry To Practice) and NESP (New Entry to Specialty Practice) programme.

The award is for the year’s outstanding graduate and is in memory of the late Marie Jarden, the hospital’s nurse manager of medical services for many years who was passionate about the development of nursing skills.

The citation read: “Rachel consistently uses her initiative to problem solve, to lead and support fellow healthcare workers, whilst ensuring high quality care is provided to residents. 

“She has a strong sense of dedication and commitment evidenced by her forward thinking and planning skills. Rachel is consistently positive and enthusiastic with residents and uses humour whilst showing genuine compassion and empathy.” 

Victoria Morris, manager at Masonic Court, said Rachel had out-performed all expectations.

“We are extremely proud to have her on our team.”
